Respraying solid oak, MDF and foil-wrapped kitchen doors

Solid oak, ash, pine, painted timber and intact MDF doors all take a 2-pack respray superbly. If your doors are vinyl/foil-wrapped and peeling around the kettle or oven, the loose vinyl cannot be painted over — instead, the sprayer heat-strips the vinyl wrap off completely and primes and sprays the solid MDF door underneath (adding €250 to €600).

Respraying a solid oak kitchen: does the woodgrain still show?

Solid oak is an ”open-pore” hardwood with deep natural grain ticks. When respraying an oak kitchen from the 1990s or 2000s, you have two choices:

  • Natural micro-grain finish (most popular). Two coats of high-build primer and two coats of 20% satin 2-pack lacquer completely obliterate the orange or dark stain colour, leaving a crisp solid sage, navy or off-white door where a subtle, authentic solid-ash/oak grain texture can still be seen up close.
  • Grain-filled smooth finish. If you want oak to look like flat smooth MDF, the sprayer applies a dedicated grain-filling paste before priming to fill every open oak pore. That adds extra workshop labour, though most homeowners prefer the subtle real-wood grain because it proves the kitchen is solid timber.

Why 2000s vinyl-wrapped doors peel — and why stripping beats replacing

Hundreds of thousands of Irish homes built between 2000 and 2012 were fitted with ”foil-wrapped” (thermoformed vinyl) Shaker or cathedral-arch doors. Underneath that thin plastic skin is a solid 18mm or 22mm routed MDF door. When steam from the kettle, dishwasher or oven breaks down the heat-activated glue after 10 to 15 years, the vinyl bubbles and splits.

Rather than paying €1,500 to €3,500 for brand-new doors, a kitchen resprayer uses heat guns to peel the entire vinyl skin off every door, washes off the old contact glue with solvent, sands the raw MDF, sprays two coats of high-build MDF edge sealer/primer, and finishes with 2-pack polyurethane lacquer. Stripping and sealing a full kitchen adds €250 to €600 to the respray price, and the finished door can never delaminate or peel again.

Questions homeowners ask

Will orange knots or dark oak stain bleed through white or cream paint?

Not when primed with a dedicated 2-pack tannin-blocking and stain-blocking primer. Water-based DIY primers often let oak tannins bleed yellow within weeks, whereas solvent-borne 2K barrier primers lock tannins in permanently.

What if only two or three of my vinyl doors are peeling?

Even if only the doors beside the oven and kettle are visibly peeling today, the glue on the remaining doors is the same age and can lift when exposed to solvent thinners. Most reputable sprayers will advise stripping the vinyl wrap off all the doors so the whole kitchen has a permanent bond straight onto the MDF core.
