How professional kitchen respraying works

A proper kitchen respray is 70% preparation and 30% spraying: all removable doors, drawers and plinths go to a heated workshop spray booth for chemical degreasing, mechanical sanding and 2-pack lacquer spraying, while the fixed cabinet frames and end panels are masked and sprayed on site in one day.

What happens on day one, how your house is protected from overspray, and why you can keep using your kitchen while the doors are away.

The five stages of a spray-booth kitchen respray

  1. Day 1: Unscrewing, numbering and transport (1 to 2 hours). The team removes every cupboard door, drawer front, kickboard and loose panel. Each piece is stamped or tagged on the hidden hinge cup so it goes back on the exact same cabinet, then loaded into padded racks for the workshop. Your sink, hob, fridge and worktops remain completely usable while the doors are in the workshop.
  2. Workshop chemical degreasing. Cooking oils and silicone polish invisible to the eye will cause paint to ”crazing” or peel within months. Every door is scrubbed with industrial alkaline and solvent degreasers, paying extra attention to doors above the hob, extractor, kettle and bin pull-out.
  3. Dust-extracted mechanical sanding & 2-pack filling. Orbital sanders hooked to HEPA extractors key every flat face and routered Shaker groove. Dings, pet scratches or old handle holes are filled with 2-pack polyester stopper and sanded flush.
  4. High-build primer & 2-pack topcoats in the booth. Doors receive one to two coats of high-adhesion 2-pack primer (with tannin blockers on oak/pine), are fine-denibbed with 320–400 grit pads between coats, and are sprayed with two coats of 2-pack polyurethane or acid-catalyst lacquer under HVLP/air-assisted airless guns.
  5. Final Day: On-site frame spraying & re-hanging (1 day). The team masks your worktops, floors, walls, ceiling and open cabinet fronts with static polythene and low-tack tape, vents the room with an extraction fan, sprays all fixed end panels, pelmets, cornices and frames with fast-dry low-odour lacquer, and re-hangs your cured doors and handles.

Why doors should be sprayed in a booth, not in your kitchen

FactorWorkshop booth + 1 day on siteSpraying everything inside your house
Dust & nibs in the finishHeated, filtered booth air keeps wet doors completely free of household dustFloating house dust settles on wet horizontal doors
Fumes & disruption80% of spraying happens off-site; your kitchen stays open all week except 1 dayHouse turned into a plastic tent for 3 to 4 full days
Curing temperatureBaked/cured at 20°C–25°C on drying racks before transportDepends on room heating and damp Irish weather
Both sides of the doorSprayed evenly on front, back and all 4 edges on rotating turntablesHarder to cure both sides rapidly in a domestic room

Brush-and-roller hand painting vs HVLP spray finishing

Hand-painting a kitchen with a brush and microfibre roller works well on period bespoke in-frame kitchens where a traditional ”brush-mark” character is wanted, and takes 5 to 8 days on site. If you want a dead-flat, factory-new finish with zero brush strokes or ”orange peel” roller texture — especially on modern Shaker, J-pull or flat slab doors — HVLP / air-assisted airless spraying lays down a uniform 120–150 micron film that looks like a brand-new factory door.

Questions homeowners ask

Can I still cook and use my kitchen while it is being resprayed?

Yes. While your doors and drawer fronts are away in the workshop spray booth (typically 3 to 5 working days), your worktops, sink, hob, oven and cupboards stay completely uncovered and usable. You only lose access to the kitchen for the 1 day (or 2 days on a very large kitchen) when the team is on site masking and spraying the fixed end panels.

Will there be paint overspray or strong fumes in my house?

Sprayers mask every counter, floor, wall and cabinet opening completely and run a portable extraction fan ducted out a window during the few hours of on-site frame spraying. Fast-flashing cabinet coatings dry to the touch in 20 to 30 minutes.
