Four colour palettes that work in Irish daylight

  • Warm off-whites, putty and greige (e.g. White Tie, Pointing, Strong White, Sublimity, Shaded White, Skimming Stone). Irish skies have a cool northern blue-grey cast for much of the year. Pure brilliant white can look clinical; warm chalky whites and stone-greiges with a drop of yellow or umber undertone keep a north-facing kitchen feeling warm.
  • Sage, eucalyptus and heritage greens (e.g. French Grey, Pigeon, Card Room Green, Calke Green, Slated Green). The top choice for respraying solid oak and country Shaker kitchens, pairing beautifully with existing black granite, warm oak or cream quartz worktops.
  • Deep navy, ink and anthracites (e.g. Railings, Stiffkey Blue, Hague Blue, Off-Black, RAL 7016 Anthracite). Dramatic on a kitchen island or base cabinet run, especially when paired with warm brushed brass cup pulls and knobs.
  • Two-tone combinations (no dark-cave effect). Spraying the tall larder and wall units in a warm limestone/off-white while spraying the island or base units in deep forest green, navy or charcoal gives you bold colour without making the room feel smaller.

Choosing a door colour that suits your existing worktop

Because a respray keeps your existing worktops, always hold your colour swatch flat against the counter and floor tiles rather than vertical against the wall:

  • If you have 2000s black galaxy or speckled grey granite: avoid stark cool grey doors (which make the kitchen look monochrome and chilly); pick warm alabaster, Cashmir/mushroom, or soft sage green.
  • If you have cream/beige quartz or cream floor tiles: avoid cool blue-undertone whites, which will make cream tiles look yellow; choose a warm ivory, putty or olive-sage that shares the same warm undertone.
  • If you have solid oak or walnut butcher-block worktops: almost any heritage green, deep navy, slate blue or chalky off-white contrasts cleanly against warm timber grain.

Questions homeowners ask

Is Farrow & Ball or Colourtrend actual wall paint used on the kitchen doors?

No — standard decorative wall or woodwork emulsion/eggshell is too soft for kitchen cabinets and will soften around handles from hand oils. Instead, your sprayer mixes the exact spectrophotometer colour formula of your chosen Farrow & Ball or Colourtrend shade into industrial 2-pack polyurethane or acid-catalyst cabinet lacquer.

Can I change my handles from wide bar handles to round knobs and cup pulls?

Yes. Before priming in the workshop, the sprayer fills your old double handle holes with rock-hard 2-pack epoxy filler and sands them invisible. Once sprayed, you can fit single knobs on the doors and cup pulls on the drawers (filling and re-drilling adds €150 to €450).
