How long does a kitchen respray last?

A professional spray-booth kitchen respray using commercial 2-pack polyurethane (2K PU) or acid-catalyst (AC) cabinet lacquer lasts 8 to 12+ years in a normal family kitchen — the exact same lifespan as the factory-sprayed finish on a brand-new €15,000 painted kitchen.

Why cabinet lacquer is chemically different from hardware-store paint, what causes cheap resprays to fail early, and how to look after your doors.

2-pack cabinet lacquer vs normal trim paint: why chemistry decides lifespan

Coating typeHow it curesHardness & grease resistanceRealistic kitchen lifespan
2-pack Polyurethane (2K PU) / Acid-Catalyst (AC) lacquerChemical cross-linking reaction with an isocyanate/acid hardenerFurniture-grade: impervious to hand oils, steam, coffee, boiling water and mild detergents8 to 12+ years
Waterborne 2K / Hybrid polyurethane cabinet enamelCross-linking waterborne resin cured in heated boothNon-yellowing, flexible on solid timber joints and highly chip-resistant8 to 10+ years
1-pack decorative water-based eggshell / satinwood (DIY)Water evaporates in room air over 7 to 14 daysSoft thermoplastic film; hand grease around handles softens paint within 18–36 months2 to 4 years before wear shows
Oil-based alkyd gloss / satinwoodOxidation in airTough, but yellows noticeably within 12–24 months inside dark areas and behind appliances3 to 5 years (yellows early)

The three shortcuts that make a cheap respray chip or peel

If you have ever seen a painted kitchen flaking around the dishwasher or handle pulls after a year, one of three prep steps was skipped:

  • Skipping alkaline + solvent degreasing. Years of airborne cooking aerosol sit in the microscopic pores of wood and around Shaker panel joints. Sanding without degreasing first simply grinds the grease deeper into the timber, preventing the primer from biting.
  • Not stripping failing vinyl wrap. Spraying straight over a vinyl-wrapped door that has already started lifting at the bottom edge guarantees the vinyl will keep curling away from the MDF core, taking the new paint with it.
  • No flexible caulking on 5-piece timber joints. Solid oak and ash stiles expand and contract slightly with winter central heating. Sprayers use a micro-bead of flexible paintable seal along deep open joints so the hairline doesn't crack cleanly in winter.

How to clean and maintain resprayed kitchen doors

  • First 14 days (full chemical cure). Although 2-pack lacquer is dry to hang within 24–48 hours, it reaches 100% cross-linked hardness over 10 to 14 days. Treat doors gently and wipe only with a damp microfibre cloth during the first fortnight.
  • Everyday cleaning. Use warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid and a soft microfibre cloth, then buff dry. Never use abrasive green scouring pads, bleach, Cif/cream cleansers, melamine ”magic erasers” (which act like ultra-fine sandpaper and polish a shiny patch onto matte/satin lacquer) or steam cleaners.
  • Touch-up pot. Ask your sprayer to leave a small labelled pot of your exact mixed topcoat and a fine artist's brush so if someone drops a heavy cast-iron pot against a base corner years later, you can dab the nick in 30 seconds.

Questions homeowners ask

Do resprayed kitchen doors chip easily?

No. Two-pack polyurethane and waterborne 2K cabinet lacquers are formulated specifically for kitchen furniture and pass commercial knock, scratch and moisture tests. Only a sharp impact from a heavy metal pan or plate edge will nick any painted timber door.

Can a resprayed kitchen be resprayed again in 10 years?

Yes. Because a 2-pack respray lays down a thin, stable 120–150 micron factory coating without heavy brush build-up, the doors can be lightly keyed and resprayed a new colour a decade later.
