Kitchen respray vs new doors vs a new kitchen

If your cabinet carcasses are dry and square, respraying a 10-to-20-door kitchen costs €1,250 to €2,000 and takes 1 to 2 days on site. Replacing the doors and worktop on the same units costs €1,350 to €5,000, while ripping out for a new mid-range kitchen costs €9,000 to €20,000.

The hidden catch with replacement doors: matching the fixed end panels

When people price replacement kitchen doors online at €48 to €62 per door, they often forget that 30% of the visible timber in a kitchen is not a door: it is the tongue-and-groove island back, the fixed end panels screwed between carcasses, the wine rack, the extractor canopy, the cornice and the light pelmet.

If you only buy new doors, you either have to pay a carpenter to strip and replace every fixed panel, plinth and cornice, or those panels stay the old colour. With a kitchen respray, all fixed end panels, frames, cornices and island backs are sprayed on site in the exact same batch of 2-pack lacquer as your doors.

Three honest signs you should not respray your kitchen

  • Blown or damp carcasses. Open the sink base unit and check the bottom floor and side panels. If a slow leak has swollen the chipboard like Weetabix and hinges are tearing out of the carcass wall, fix or replace the carcass before spending money on the doors.
  • You hate the shape of the doors. Respraying changes the colour and sheen completely, and filling handle holes lets you change hardware, but a routed cathedral-arch door will still have an arch after spraying. If you want a flat handleless door instead of a raised panel, buy replacement doors.
  • You are moving the sink, hob or knocking a wall in 12 months. If a building extension is planned for next year, wait and put the budget toward the new room layout.

Questions homeowners ask

Is it cheaper to respray kitchen doors or replace them?

Once you include matching all the fixed end panels, plinths, cornices, island backs and fitting labour, respraying (€1,250 to €2,000 for 10 to 20 doors) is usually €500 to €2,000 cheaper than buying and fitting new doors plus replacement end panels and trim.

Can I combine a kitchen respray with a new worktop and sink?

Yes — that is the most popular full kitchen makeover in Ireland. Pairing a medium kitchen respray (€1,250 to €2,000) with new handles (€150 to €450) and a new fitted laminate worktop (€800 to €2,000) gives you a completely transformed kitchen for €2,200 to €4,450.
